Some of the reasons why step motors are widely used in automation are because they are low cost and easy to use. At the root of these and other benefits lies the open loop system architecture that’s been employed to control step motors for years. Aside from these benefits, experienced users will know that as soon as you demand too much torque from the step motor, it will often stall without warning. Fortunately, this and other traditional limitations of step motor systems can be avoided by simply adding an encoder to the system.

On Friday, July 31, Applied Motion Products hosted students from the local non-profit organization Digital NEST for a tour of our Watsonville headquarters. The purpose of the tour and visit was to see a large format, commercial 3D printer in action and learn how integrated stepper motors from Applied Motion play a critical role in the functioning of that printer. In the days leading up to the visit, the students participated in a 3D modeling and printing workshop provided by the Digital NEST.

Digital Nest, a Watsonville tech incubator, recently held its first Ag Tech Meetup, bringing together local technology firms and members of the Pajaro Valley agricultural community. Applied Motion Products CEO Don Macleod introduced some of our ruggedized motion control products which can be used to improve farming efficiency while surviving the typically harsh environmental conditions of the Ag industry.

Design World contributing editor Steve Meyer recently published an article titled “Step Motors: Take a Step in the Right Direction” featuring Applied Motion’s very own Jeff Kordik, Chief Technical Officer, and the new StepSERVO™ line of integrated stepper motors. The article is about the traditional limitations of step motors – such as rotor settling time, resonance and motor heating – and how those limitations can be overcome using closed loop current control.

The Plan: Teams will receive $1000 in store credit to use in the Applied Motion Products (AMP) web store. Each small group team will create a 5-10 minute YouTube video highlighting their implementation of AMP products in a motion control application. This is an opportunity to be incredibly creative. (Have an idea for a cool ping pong ball launcher? A camera that can track an object? A unique micro mouse? We challenge you to be as innovative as possible.)

Applied Motion Products is proud to announce that Mr. Don Macleod has joined the company as President, reporting to the Board of Directors.

Don’s 30 years of experience with step motors began when he received a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Leeds in 1982 and was immediately hired by our company for a period of four years.

After his initial tour with Applied Motion from 1982 to 1986, Don spent 22 years with Seagate Technology where he was promoted to Executive Director of Media Engineering, Mechanical Platforms and Motor Division. In 2009 Don left Seagate to become President of Aura Systems, a manufacturer of mobile power generators and electronics.

C&E Sales, Inc was founded in 1978 and focuses on supplying non-contact sensing solutions for factory automation, communication and device level bus products, and more recently, motion controls. C&E Sales covers sales for Applied Motion in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.
